When the truth hides, courage rises

A deadly disease, a mysterious island, a race against time, and three siblings who must find courage they didn’t know they had.

Gummy’s stories were famous for making the Blink kids jump, but none of them ever expected to land inside one. When a deadly illness called The Sorrow strikes their family, Taddy, Styn, and Parker discover an ancient map pointing to a place that does not want to be found: the Island of the Angry Smile.

Racing to find a cure, they must navigate treacherous jungles, mysterious caves, secret laboratories, and betrayal from someone close to them. With quick thinking, humor, and Gummy’s life on the line, they must uncover the island’s darkest secret. The answer lies within them, but only courage will unlock it.

Time is running out.

Gummy’s gaze lingered on the marks. For a moment he didn’t answer. “Sometimes maps carry more than directions,” he said at last. “Sometimes they carry a cost.”

“A cost?” Styn whispered.

He tapped the dot the arrow pointed to, slowly and deliberately. Then he handed the map back. “Ad astra per aspera.”

“Huh?”

“It’s Latin for ‘To the stars through difficulties.’”

Island of the Angry Smile is a middle-grade adventure that blends mystery, imagination, and quiet emotional depth. While the story moves quickly and keeps its sense of fun, it is grounded in themes many children this age are beginning to explore: fear, responsibility, trust, and courage in uncertain moments.

The three siblings at the heart of the story are not superheroes. They doubt themselves, make mistakes, and learn to rely on one another when adults fall short. Courage here is not loud or flashy. It grows through perseverance, compassion, and the choice to keep going when answers are unclear.

Woven into the adventure are gentle, story-driven moments that draw on real-world science and problem-solving. These elements are introduced naturally through the characters’ experiences, encouraging curiosity and thoughtful questions without interrupting the flow of the story or turning it into a lesson.

The novel works well as an independent read or a family read-aloud. Many adults find themselves drawn in by the layered storytelling and the way imagination, discovery, and human connection quietly intersect.

Author Bio

Michael Kulwiec started writing stories long before he ever stepped into a science lab, where he discovered that science and imagination make a pretty great team. Today, he helps researchers share their discoveries through his studio, DesignLab, while creating adventure stories in his Laboratory of Imagination in San Diego, California with his wife, Pam.

Neighborhood kids often wander by for a chat, a sneak peek at his latest idea, and maybe a gummy or two. Some of those conversations have a way of turning into stories.
