Where love makes unexpected gifts grow.

A quiet neighborhood. A forgotten tree. A surprising act of love that changes everything.

In a neighborhood of sidewalks, bikes, and busy people rushing by, Grace notices something most others overlook—a spindly, almost-dead tree standing alone near the sidewalk.

When her mother encourages her to look not just with her eyes, but with her heart, Grace begins to see the world differently. And one day, when a lonely boy pauses beneath that forgotten tree, something wonderful happens.

Grace and the Gummy Tree is a tender, lyrical story about noticing others, believing in unseen gifts, and discovering how love can bring sweetness to unexpected places. With gentle rhyme and warm illustrations, this story invites children and grown-ups alike to slow down, look closer, and remember that grace often appears right where we least expect it.

Perfect for reading together, this book offers a comforting reminder that kindness matters and that even what looks broken can still bloom with grace

Grace and the Gummy Tree is a quiet story about learning to see the world not only as it appears, but as it can become when viewed through love and grace.

As Grace learns to look beyond what seems broken or forgotten, the story gently introduces the idea that some of the most meaningful gifts are not earned or expected—they are given freely. The gummies that appear on the tree are not a reward, but a response to need, reflecting the deeper truth that grace is love offered without condition.

While the story never explains this idea directly, it invites readers to experience it. Children are encouraged to notice others, to respond with kindness, and to trust that goodness can appear even where nothing seems to be growing.

This book works best as a shared read-aloud, opening space for conversation about compassion, gratitude, and the mystery of receiving what we do not deserve. Families, classrooms, and faith communities may each find their own meaning within the story, guided by the simple reminder that love—when freely given—has the power to bring unexpected sweetness into the world.

Author Bio

Michael Kulwiec thrives in the wide, wonderful world of imagination, a place where stories are more than make-believe and feelings run just as deep as they do in real life.

He believes a child’s imagination can cross the space between wonder and meaning, between challenges and courage, and between who we are now and who we are becoming. Stories, at their best, give children room to feel deeply and discover things in their own time.

Michael writes his books in what he calls his Laboratory of Imagination in San Diego, California, where he lives with his wife, Pam. Almost every day, kids stop by the gummy tree near the sidewalk for a treat and a chat, sharing stories about school, upcoming birthdays, small worries, and big plans. These ordinary moments, filled with feeling and possibility, often find their way into his books.
